"I wanted to support INREES as I realized through the questions often asked to astronauts that a lot of preconceived ideas unconsciously lead to an often false impression of reality and unjustly make it seem that our current level of knowledge allows us to answer just about any question. Seen from space, our planet seems so isolated in the deep blackness of the universe that you become humble before the immensity of what remains to be discovered around us and inside of us. It is thus important not to neglect or reject even the slightest unusual experience or perception so as to help understand ourselves better."
An astronaut since 1985, he has flown on three space shuttle missions: in 1994 to study the atmosphere, in 1997 to deliver supplies to the Russian space station MIR, and in 1999, to repair the Hubble telescope. Active member of the European astronaut corps, he currently divides his time between his functions as senior astronaut on the ESA « Jules Verne » project – a supply shuttle spacecraft for the international space station – and his responsibilities as CEO of Novespace, a company which organizes parabolic flights for research in conditions of weightlessness. He joined the National Center for Space Studies (CNES) in 1983, and since 1992, integrated the European Space Agency.
